Our Mission Story
2006-2009: Beginnings

The foundation of CEI was laid in 2006 when Stephanie Marder was diagnosed with lymphoma. After her recovery, her family became involved with the American Cancer Society, which sparked the idea of creating a larger support network within the electrical industry.

In December 2009, Rick Kerman from Steiner and Rick Marder discussed organizing an industry-wide fundraiser. Tragically, in January 2010, another Steiner's employee's child was diagnosed with lymphoma, underscoring the widespread impact of cancer. These events prompted the two Ricks to establish CEI, with support from David Witz, President of Continental Electric, and other industry leaders. Together, they formed an executive committee comprising representatives from Advance, Block, Continental, Divane Bros., Hubbell, Kelso-Burnett, Panduit, Revere, Schnieder, and Steiner.

The logo for CEI was thoughtfully crafted to embody the unity and diversity of the electrical industry. It incorporates elements that represent manufacturers, distributors, and contractors, symbolizing the collaborative spirit among these key segments. The design features interconnected symbols reflecting the strength and synergy that arise when these groups come together. CEI hopes this logo serves as a beacon of unity, transcending competition and fostering collaboration among both competing and complementary companies within the Chicago electrical industry. By rallying around this emblem, CEI aims to inspire a collective effort to raise funds for charitable causes, demonstrating that together, we can create a powerful impact on our community.

2010-2011: Establishing Our Mission

CEI was officially formed with a vision to unite competitive and complementary companies within the electrical industry in service to help those less fortunate and enhance the social fabric within our community. Our mission is to create an environment where employees from member companies can collectively participate in activities to raise funds and awareness for charitable organizations providing essential services.

In 2011, we chose to partner with the American Cancer Society and participated in our first Walk & Roll Chicago event. Our goal was to raise $55,000, but thanks to the incredible support from our community, we raised over $160,000.

2012: Expansion and Success

In 2012, our network grew to include 24 companies, such as Agents Midwest, Allied Tube & Conduit, Anixter, Callas/Kingsley, Cooper, Electri-Flex, Emerson EGS, Gibson Electric, Graybar, Klein Tools, KSA Lighting, Siemens, and Wesco. With a goal of $250,000, we surpassed expectations by raising over $268,000.

2013-Present: Continuing the Fight

Over the past eleven years, CEI has raised an impressive $2.4 million. Working with the American Cancer Society has been incredibly rewarding. The ACS is involved in all types of cancer research, prevention studies, patient and family support programs, non-partisan advocacy, and educational initiatives.
